Ethos:

At Middlethorpe Academy we aim to build respect and tolerance of other countries, cultures, people and their beliefs. We encourage understanding and acceptance of these differences and aim to develop curiosity of the world in a respectful way.

We aim to immerse pupils in a multi-cultural world by introducing and exposing our children to cultures that they are not aware of. We seek to give pupils an understanding of global issues such as climate change, the environment and sustainability. We aim to broaden the children’s knowledge of the wider world and the interdependence of communities within it.

  • Reception- Spain
  • Y1- France
  • Y2- Africa
  • Y3- China
  • Y4- Greece
  • Y5- Egypt
  • Y6- India

This curriculum is delivered through Talk for Learning and whenever possible is interwoven with English and Maths core skills, as well as History, Geography, SMSC and Citizenship.

Curriculum Opportunities:

Term 1:

We start by looking at the country now, developing an understanding of its location, its environment, and the modern day culture. We ask the question ‘What would it be like to visit?’ and ‘How is this country different to the UK?’ Pupils research the various aspects and make conclusions, building an image and understanding of what it would be like.

Term 2:

We move on to asking the question ‘What was this country like in the past?’ and ‘What are the significant historical events?’ ‘Who are the significant people and why?’ We find out how the country has changed and developed over time to become the place it is now.

Term 3:

We focus on an environmental or global issue in the country which also has an effect on the UK. We ask ‘How can we help?’ and encourage the pupils to think of others around the world now and in the future. How can they make a difference?

Outcomes:

As they leave Middlethorpe Academy, we want our pupils to express kindness, show empathy towards others and think about people in other countries and communities around the world. By looking beyond themselves and developing an understanding of other people’s experiences, they will develop an awareness of their place in the world and appreciate how to live in it responsibly. Drawing on the skills and understanding they have developed over their time with us they will become prepared for the next stage in their learning.
